ABOUT THE DIVISION
WELCOME LETTER FROM THE
DIVISION CHAIR
The American Chemical Society's Division of Petroleum Chemistry is a vibrant professional network of scientists and engineers interested in the chemistry of petroleum exploration, production, refining, and utilization. For several decades, this interdisciplinary Division has created opportunities for technical and professional development through relevant symposia, comprehensive tutorials, efficient programming, timely proceedings, and effective networking opportunities. The Division in general:
1. Conducts Symposia
Division Symposia provide a forum for members to present research on areas of interest. The Division's technical sessions typically occupy a full week at each National Meeting of the American Chemical Society and frequently require one or more days of simultaneous sessions.
2. Publishes Research
Preprints of the papers presented at Division symposia are published twice every year to widely disseminate research findings. Papers presented at Division symposia also often become part of new volumes in the ACS Symposium Series or the Advances in Chemistry Series.
3. Publishes Newsletters
The Division publishes a newsletter summarizing Division activities, symposia, and opportunities of relevance to Division members.
4. Creates Networking Opportunities
The Division holds a social hour and dinner at each National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. This custom began in 1924 and is a popular opportunity to gather informally, renew old friendships, make new connections, and talk about petroleum chemistry and more.
5. Provides Recognition
The Division recognizes its members and leaders in the area through awards and special symposia. A recent initiative that is underway focuses on creating an endowment for students conducting research in petroleum chemistry.
